512MB graphics cards hit the streets

Sapphire has announced its first 512MB graphics card, the X800XL 512, that will retail at approximately £282 (inc VAT). Other vendors are likely to follow soon, coming hot on the heels of ATI's announcement of its Radeon X800 XL range.

The extra memory will be useful for games such as Id's Doom 3 that require 512MB memory in order to use maximum quality settings, and it can also reduce the need for games to swap textures from disk, allowing smoother gameplay.
