Philips' Photonic Pillow
On a recent trip to Philips' secret bunker in Eindhoven, we had the pleasure of trying out some very cool gadgets. Amongst the James Bond-esque gizmos on show was a photonic textile system that allowed ordinary cloth-based materials to act as an LCD display.
Products that use this technology included a pillow and backpack that could show low-res images as well as receive and display text messages. The applications for such a technology may seem quite limited, but Philips believes photonic textiles could open up a range of innovative lighting applications.
We put forward some bright ideas of our own including photonic wallpaper that changes colour and pattern according to your mood, or a t-shirt that changes its colour and logo on demand.
Unfortunately we couldn’t think of any use for the backpack display, other than sending a text to the wearer that reads 'kick me'.
Read the next issue of PCW for more on photonic textiles, and to get the full lowdown on Philips' mad vision of the future.
