Wifi Mimo chipset outpaces wired nets

Wireless networks will be faster than the average wired one by the end of the year with the launch of a new chipset, developer Airgo says.

The True MIMO chipset is the company's third generation to support Multiple In Multiple Out, which uses multiple paths and several aerials to boost data rates. It is rated at 240M bit/sec, which Airgo will translate to a real throughout of 120Mbits/sec.

This is about twice the rate you are likely to get on a 100Mbit/sec wired local network; the next generation 802.11n Wifi spec promises a true 100Mbits/sec throughput. The new chipset supports standard 11a,11b and 11g links.

Airgo chipsets are used in routers and other products from Belkin, Buffalo, Linksys, Netgear, and  Samsung, Products using the new chipset are due to shiup by the end of this year.
