Apple launches iPod video

IpodphotoIt was the worst kept secret, but then Apple has become master manipulators of news about their products.

As expected, tonight's announcement, which had been all over the press (and how many other companies could generate so much coverage about a launch that no one 'officially' knew about) is for the latest generation iPod, and now it plays video as well.

This is a good move by Apple because we're seeing more and more portable multimedia players on the market. It's also a good two fingers at Microsoft, which is struggling to get its Media Center operating system widely accepted on these portable players. It can be connected to your TV, either directly or via the optional dock, and can be operated via a remote.

It's thinner than current iPods, comes with a 30GB or 60GB hard drive and will cost £219 or £299 respectively. Like previous iPods, it also plays music and photos.

Apple claims it can hold up to 150 hours of video, which you can watch on a 2.5in display. The company is still smarting from recent revelations about cracked screens on its iPod nano, so it needs to ensure the quality of these. We've not heard any complaints about screen problems on full-sized iPods, but we'll check anyway.Ipodphoto2

Another problem with many early generation portable multimedia players was that the screen picture quality wasn't that good, so again, this is something to check out.

UPDATE: Our review is now online.

This iPod is just a stop-gap - apparently there's a new, full-blown video iPod coming out next year.

Also the rumour is that a pink, Madonna iPod nano is coming out next month.

Can I plug my iPod news site: http://www.ipod.org.uk. Thanks.

I have had my 30gig ipod video for less than a week and the screen cracked in my pocket with no other signs of damage. (sounds like the ipod nano) I have seen numerous people posting on the internet having the same problem. The apple store won't replace.

Posted by ukai | January 2, 2006 12:47 AM

i had kinda the same problem my ipod has just been sitting in a dock and for no reason scratches have appeared over the screen and casing without even doing anything with it!!

Posted by Dan Pitt | January 18, 2006 8:04 PM

You've had it less than a month and they wont replace it? It's not covered for even 30 days? I don't know how they can call themselves a reputable company. I strongly considered buying an ipod but after hearing about ipod not standing behind their products from countless people, I'm now looking elsewhere.

Posted by zippy | January 20, 2006 12:28 AM

yea my ipod broke down and apple did replace it so hahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahaha

Posted by sharon | February 27, 2006 3:04 PM

same old, same old...new video ipod LCD screen breaks..just like the nano story and yep Apple and Best Buy says I must have dropped it. NO WAY. No replacement of it either by Apple or Best Buy...even with a service plan! Anyone interested in starting a class action suit? Both Apple & Best Buy knowningly sell faulty products...not good.

Posted by Terri | April 1, 2006 2:16 PM

sons of bitches, my damn video screen broke aswell. anyone here have instructions on how to replace the screen yourself?

Posted by neil | April 6, 2006 10:42 PM

Even though I kept mine in the little leatheresque type matierial the screen scratched up really quickly. Then a week after I got it the screen dented in my pocket, so none of he screen information is visable. Not ideal for avideo ipod.
It costs £120 to replace the screen, which broke through no misuse or fault of my own.How is this acceptable!

The nature of an ipod means you carry it everywhere with you, surely it should be durable.
What a rip off!

Posted by ruby | April 18, 2006 8:36 PM

My LCD on the ipod video is dead. I never dropped it. I sent my ipod for apple warranty service, they returned it without fixing it. Their tone is LCD failure is your problem.
Can anyone file a class action law suit for this?
I know in case of ipod nano this has been done and Apple now replaces defective unit on the warranty. I am sick of apple's warranty program.

Posted by Steve | April 20, 2006 10:14 PM

I am looking to join a class action lawsuit on the LCD screen as well. MY 30GB iPod video screen developed the "oil slick" effect at 90 days old and apple won't repair or replace, says it's due to "consumer abuse" even though I took excellent care of it! I am so angry I can't even put it into words...

Posted by Wendy Donahue | April 25, 2006 4:25 AM

Nope, just stepped on mine. Sounds like "consumer abuse" to me. Still don't know how to replace it anyway...

Posted by anonymous | April 28, 2006 1:43 PM

Yeah,

Ive had my 30gb ipod video for 2 weeks when i got the "oil slick"

It isnt obvious when the backlight is on but when it is off and in light it can cover upto 3/4 of the screen.

Its annoying.

Posted by Jake | June 5, 2006 5:18 PM

i´ve had mine for 5 months. this morning, i woke up and went to my pc to grab the headphones. then i took out my ipod, and it was broke. does the warranty covers broken screens.
oh! and what´s the "oil screen" that everyone is talking about?

Posted by nev | June 6, 2006 6:14 PM

I have experienced the same issue with my ipod video. I had it in my pocket while I was spraying off my driveway, and when I took it out to turn it off, my sceen was cracked with an oil slick. I went to the Apple store today expecting a full replacement, and they rudely told me it was my fault, and I must have put pressure on it some how. They would not replace it. I let them know that I was extremely dissapointed and that the product clearly is defective, and they took the attitude that its too bad. I have printed the complaints posted on this message board and I am taking it back in to show them that I am not alone with this.

Posted by Brett | June 7, 2006 2:21 AM

well it seems everyone is having this problem but ill post it anyway to show how much apple is ripping everyone off with there bullsh*it warranty. I had my ipod for hardly 5 months since christmas. One day i put my ipod in a small pocket of my backpack and the ipod was in a case of its own. Simply walked to my buddys house, took it out and the screen was cracked. I was PISSED. And now apple tells me its my fault. No how bout u make a much more reliable product and if u cant do that then replace the dam thing when it F*cks up.

Posted by ipodsucks | June 8, 2006 11:22 PM

Yeah i had my ipod since christmas and at school today when i took it out the screen was all fucked up n it appeeared to be a crack in it that fucked the half of the screen up. i was reeally pissed off until my buddies said to send it to ipod and theyll return it. i was fine until i came on here and saw that they wont return it. im fucking pissed off at apple for not taking them back

Posted by Travis | June 16, 2006 2:35 AM

i just ad the same problem yesterday, i went 4 a walk with my ipod video in its little case then tuk it out nd the screen was cracked! no idea wat happend iv only had it since christmas, apple wont do anything about it, im gona claim off the house insurance!

Posted by tommy | June 20, 2006 2:42 PM

I am pisssed. My screen has been cracked for 6 months. Everything works great....the music still plays, i can still put songs on it...Its just that I cant see a damn thing..
The sad part about it is that I put it in a supposably "durable" case that I bought..and I dropped it ...and all of a sudden....cracked screen...damn case wasnt worth shit...Sure it saved the i pod from scratches...but it didnt help the screen one bit. At first u couldnt see half the screen...now it completely doesnt show a thing. i have tried talking to Apple...but all they will tell me is to buy a new i pod or try to fix it myself. Warranty or no warranty. All i know is that this makes no sense...and its total bull. So much for apple taking care of its customers!

Posted by Nashawn | June 24, 2006 8:10 PM

Well i am going to do something about this, cause fuck if i did it! i took my ipod outta my bag which had been lying around all day, i was takin it out to charge it and the screen was f*ucked! apperntly i did it, but im not standing for that at all x

Posted by Sam | June 29, 2006 9:40 PM

CRACKED SCREEN 2 WEEKS OLD had my ipod 30g 5th generation for two weeks and presto cracked screen after i charged it and control wheel all over the place and half of the left screen dissaperaed sent it to apple and there response not in warranty i said fix the other two faults with the unit there reply cant needs a new screen ( told them not my fucken problem )told them to replace the screen fix the two problems then take the screen out and put mine back in has gone to the next level of management now waiting for a reply within 2 days let you know how i go.

FUCK YOU APPLE!!!! FUCK YOU!

Posted by jaymason | July 7, 2006 3:00 AM

These Stupid People call themselves a company? My ipod nano is a little over 6 months old and the freakin screen broke. I went to the apple store and the guy looked at me and said sorry its not under warranty and walked away. They say its the greatest music playing device but it cant even withstand a few hours in a backpack! These people are complete idiotic jerks

Posted by ChattyChick | July 8, 2006 2:47 AM

i appear to have the "oil slick" problem and am very confused as to why this is, but ontop of that it wont even turn on . ive only had mine for as long as the xbox 360 release, and i only used it with the xbox360, it just sites ther so i can play my music through my games , thats all i use it for. I have the 30g video ipod.

Posted by base | July 11, 2006 8:52 PM

i had the same problem, got my ipod just before xmas looked after it as much as you can, allways kept in case, never dropped, allways in pocket on its own etc. and after about 2 months the screen cracks in the time it took to put in my pocket and walk to my car(30 sec walk), phones up apple and they said they wont relase it as it was my own fault and should of looked after it better. also to top it all off, broughtit out of a catalogue and im still paying it of grrr

Posted by james_c | July 11, 2006 10:17 PM

I have an Ipod 30gb, and same thing...piece of crap with the oil slick on the screen and apple will do nothing.

I got a 30GB Video Ipod from USA. I live in the UK and brought it back with me. 3 months after I bought it, the screen developed an oil slick. I sent it off for repair - Apple sent it back to me saying it was damaged by neglect. I DID NOT EVEN DROP IT!
They refuse to repair it. What should I do?

Apple warranty that doesn't give 365 days despite dending a brand new ipod.
This is my fourth mini in less than 2 years yet they will not give me a full 1 year as it is a "service" replacement. Can they do this. Class action speaks louder than words

Posted by newmarket | July 28, 2006 4:46 PM

We got a video Ipod w/ case protector for our teenage son 3 weeks ago. I accidentally knocked it off the table w/ my elbow & it fell on the kitchen floor. The screen is completely cracked & Apple won't cover it. I have made numerous calls & have had no luck. Less then 30 days old & no coverage. I cannot believe Apple would sell a product that is made for commuters & that it would be so fragile. It didn't even fall very far or hard! Unbelievable! We were thinking of purchasing an Apple computer, but this has changed our minds! They should sell it as a disposable product for less money! Of course they don't know of anyone who could fix it either. How convenient!

i had my ipod for maybe 3 weeks i had it in my pocket in loose shorts and the screen cracked i sent it to ipod they said user abuse cant fix it i was like thats gay cannon if u drop it and break it theyll send u a new one

Posted by sam | August 19, 2006 10:22 PM

I've had my nano for 3 months and dropped it today, not from a great height or with any force, but the screen still cracked despite it being in a so called durable case! Was gutted to see that Apple will not replace / repair. Is their warranty actually worth anything at all? From reading the amount of disgruntled customers I see not, despite the fact that this is so obviously a design / quality issue. I called their so-called technical help to find out if I could get repaired - NO! Asked how much if I paid for it and they gave me a website in Texas and could not give me anyone here in the UK and told me to look around the internet!!
I am not impressed and can honestly say that I will never buy Apple again and will make sure I tell anyone who listens about my experience to dissuade others from making the same mistake by buying crap from a money grabbing corporation!

Posted by Alison | August 21, 2006 4:18 PM

urgh, I'm pissed, my ipod broke too. Ipod video that is...I've had it for 2 months max and I take it out of my bag as usual and find the LCD screen cracked. Everything else works...so on the bright side it's like I have the world's largest ipod shuffle :/ URGH.

Posted by Ting | August 28, 2006 3:22 AM

i used my christmas money to by my ipod so i savedup to get a case and never took it out and then i decided to clean and wen i pulled it out it was scratched as if it does it to itself and then i took out of my pocket and the screen was cracked. i was so pissed. i even went to futureshop and i purchased a 100 dollar service plan and they still said it was my fault. way to go apple u sell faulty products for outrageous prices

I have had my ipod video for about 5 months and the screen broke on me. The crazy thing was that I even kept in inside one of those RhinoSkin hard aluminum cases just so this wouldnt happen. I put it in my backpack before I went to class and then when I pulled it back out the screen was cracked. I dont exactly know how I need to go about trying to get apple to repair it, but from what I have been reading it is just a lost cause.

Posted by highly pissed of | September 1, 2006 4:45 AM

I bought my grandson an Ipod 30gb 5th gen video and in 5 days the screen broke. I brought it back to Best Buy who said that it was broken by abuse but when I argued with the manager he told me too bad but they would not send it back to CrApple and it was my problem. Well after getting over my pissed off mental state I got on the internet , downloaded the manual for replacing the screen with great pictures, then got on Ebay and bought a brand new replacement screen for $36.00 US.
Screw Best Buy and Apple. I will never buy another Apple product again.

Posted by Don Brechun | September 5, 2006 6:12 PM

5th generation iPOD scroll wheel will not select different catogories. sent it to be repaired. I was denied because of 2 SUPERFICAL DENTS IN THE BACK. I called the corporiate office and spoke with "K...." he stated there is nothing that can be done. All I asked was for them to prove that those superfical dents that you have to hold the iPOD at eye level to see caused the scroll wheel button to not work. He stated if the dents where not there they would have replaced it. I am so ready for a class action lawsuit and currently looking for a lawyer.

Posted by amanda | September 5, 2006 6:56 PM

can you pay to have the screen fixed? i dropped my ipod 60gb video and the screen is cracked.. can you pay to get it fixed because i doubt the warrenty will cover it

Posted by colm | September 17, 2006 2:54 PM

I bought an iPod 30GB in June from Amazon. It was a gift for my daughter. Just got back from a trip and she showed me that the screen now looks like it has died a death - only half is visible, the rest looks like something has blown. NO visible marks on the casing - she did not drop it/knock it or do anything else other than listen to music on it! This is the second iPod she has had problems with (the battery died on the first). It may be an iconic product but if my experience is anything to go by Apple's QA needs serious attention. Tried to get Amazon to help but they sent me to Apple's support line - someone in India who couldn't help. I managed to talk to the Apple store in Regent Street - apparently I need to make an appointment, go out of my way so that they can look at their broken product and decide if they will help - any bets on this? My other kids have iRivers - no problems at all and the interface is much better. What's all the fuss? Should consumers put up with poor product to be cool? Time to vote with our wallets?

Curious question to all those who own a 30gig ipod video. I noticed the other day that for some reason when I played my music under songs, the numbers above the song title didn’t display the total of number of songs that I have in my Itune’s library. So I looked into the albums list on the ipod, and for some reason there were songs missing. Why is this? And how can I get all the songs from my itune’s library onto my ipod? Note: my Ipod still has 25-27gb left so it’s nowhere near full.

I've had mine about two months with no problems. I've had a few glitches in the software but nothing that hasn't reset itself I guess... I'd like to know though, did any of you take into consideration the temperature you were in at the time of the screen cracks? Maybe its from hotter or colder temps, and maybe we can find a way to maybe help prevent the problem for some of us?

I can assure you, if mine does fail, that I will be contacting as many people as possible for a class action suit.

Thanks.

My daughter saved up her hard earned money from two jobs to purchase this piece of apple IPod crap. Screen busted after 3 months and believe me she babied this thing! Never again! She's looking into other products now and Best Buy would do nothing for her either!

Just let you know the creative Zen video is no better, my screen cracked with no abuse and their customer service is the same as Apple. "tuff luck "

My 18 year old son saved up from his Saturday job to get himself one of the new Ipod videos. He has had it for precisely 6 days. Treats it like a baby, handles it very carefully. Took it out of its holder today, hasn't been dropped, bashed, banged, no marks on it or evidence of any impact - the internal screen is cracked. To say he is p**ssed off is an understatement. He rang apple, they said go back to the dealer... in other words .. not our problem, sod off...Thanks Crapple...

I dropped my ipod and the screen crcked straight away. Now if i pay 270 for the damn thing i should imagine that if i drop it once it would be in good working order... Thyen to try and make somebody pay the cost of another ipod just to fix it is clearly taking the pi*s.

I haven't taken mine in yet but gathering from what everyone is saying they don;t give a crap about this problem and we're the ones at loss.. after spending so much with apple aswell.

I love the way that on the Ipod advert all these 'cool dudes' are jumping around shaking their a**sses and so presumably you SHOULD expect to be able to at least WALK AROUND WITH ONE IN YOUR SODDING POCKET without the bloody thing busting. Clearly they are just NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE if they can just break like that!! Although my son didn't bash his, they SHOULD withstand knocks, they are supposed to be used on the MOVE, that's the bloody point of them....

ya ive got a qeustion my screen is broke on my 30g and i cant see shit on it can they replace the screen if i buy a new screen and how much does it cost to do something like that

Posted by jake | March 15, 2007 12:23 AM

same happened to me today, went to listen 2 music and it was cracked right across the screen. Its only 4 months old!! Apple said it should of been in my jean pocket because of pressure but in the manual or anywhere else does it say keep away from tight areas and even on thier adverts, the ppl on there have the ipods in thier pockets dancing around. Its all crap because its to expensive for them 2 repair

I just bought my ipod video 80 gb last week and purchased a protective arm band for it. I have been using it with no problem and then today I paused a song to answer the phone and now it will not turn on. Does anyone know how to turn it ON? This is the second time it actually happend the first time I thought the battery might be dead then I plugged it into computer and started right up. NOW IT DOESN'T TURN ON AT ALL AND MY PC DOES NOT EVEN MAKE SOUND WHEN YOU CONNECT USB DEVICE.

I've had my Ipod video 30G since 5/30/06... Payed the money for the warranty too! Ended up costing my family and I $360.00. I babied this thing for a year now, making sure nothing happened to it. Always made sure it wasn't going to fall off or was always plugged in right and everything. I also probably spent another $300 in accessories for the thing! Well, about a week ago, I had my Ipod in its $30 case, in my loose pants (Strike me if I wear tight girl pants) And was listening to music. About an hour later I go to change the song, and I realized I got a crack down my screen. Thought it was alright, a little crack won't be too bad, but then a day went by and half my screen is black and I can't functionally use my Ipod, especially for video... Since... Last time I checked, you can't watch video without a screen that works! So today I went down to Best Buy, confident that they'll replace my screen because of the warranty, but instantly turned down because of neglect. Let's recap: I babied this thing. I wasn't like those people in the commercials jumping around and having the cord and thing fly around. Versatile? How about seeing a person use the arm band for when they want to jog, if that thing drops when they're doing a good run, that thing won't last, especially in the society we live in where beneath us is usually pavement or cement. But another thing, that just caught me: How about watching free "Strongbad" Podcasts given by iTunes? Ever watch the end? Well, as the cartoon comedian does at the end: Looks around and starts beating on the screen, as if trying to get out, then cracks the screen and says: "Wow, I hope you got the extended warranty." Subliminally, this is neglect as well as false advertisement for getting a repair on the screen for it being broken. I will send an E-Mail stating the condition of my own Ipod, the service I received from Best Buy... The *neglect* on their behalf to their customers, this website feed which clearly has a lot of feedback from other customers, and stated that we will be forced to perform a Class Action Suit against them if they do not meet to their customer's demands.

If Apple does not comply and follow through with this, we WILL have a Class Action Suit. This has gone on long enough.

Respectfully Submitted,

Nicholas

Oh by the way guys, Apple doesn't support "Accidental Damages"... But support the free fixes on any Nanos that may have a crack in the screen, as said in this article: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050927-5358.html
Is it just because it's a smaller screen and people don't need to enjoy looking at is as much, or because it costs less against the company to fix? Seriously, who would PURPOSELY break an IPOD, call to Apple in tears and say "I broke my IPOD... I was holding it in my hands ever so delicately, and it broke"... In response from them "Tough luck. If you break it, it's your 30/60/80 gigs you can't use to its full potential again. Suckers."

... Won't cover accidental... Do I need to go on or do you catch my drift?

... But they're taking in nanos and fixing their screens... What's a faulty Vender to a consumer anyway?

Okay so its clear that there is an issue with cracking. I just got an 80gb and it appeared to be scratched then suddenly it was a deep crack. I scheduled to go into Apple but it looks as if they wont do a thing. So basically where can I go from here? Will it still have a long life and function okay with a crack coming from the dial on the front screen?

Posted by Marie | July 29, 2007 8:06 AM

Okay, so seriously, to fix your screen, Apple won't cover it, so I bought a warranty for nothing. I can buy a replacement screen for about as much for a cheaper mp3 player (about $80)... Having been done so either I do it myself or send it to a technician, paying more on labor to do that... Oh, and voiding the warranty that I bought on it... I want my money back...

Hi all, you can get a replacement screen from eBay for less than $20.
Also provided are instructions to replace them.

I have a slightly diff problem though... My Ipod is no longer in warranty and it does not do anything! If I charge it, nothing happens, if I plug it in to the computer, it is not recognised.

Any ideas?

how do i send my video ipod in to see wats wrong with it? when i put it on itunes it keeps saying that it is curupted. so how do u fix it?

Posted by jahawn | August 30, 2007 10:18 PM

I have a 30gb Ipod which has been sitting on my desk, never moved, never given any cause to be damaged, still in case.
Crack developed overnight across the screen.
So I contacted Curries who I purchased it from to find out what they would require for an exchange.
Well...forget it, even though it is still on warranty.."they dont regard it as a fault" Passed me onto a number, who told me the same thing..and passed me to apple..and all I got was a long hold on a premium rate number!

FOR THOSE IN THE UK: I don't know if this will work, but try either Trading Standards, Citizens Advice Bureaux or WHICH, especially WHICH, might get you somewhere. Although I'm an Apple Fan myself, I think if a company isn't prepared to even listen, you need to chew their balls off, may be Mr Jobs might behave a little differently with out his balls. I'm having trouble with Leopard at the moment, got it two hours early great and then the blood thing would not install and trying to get a replacement, if your not chewing on their ghoulies 24/7, they let you slide. If you want to sue them, find a friendly tabloid, get a petition together and then sue the bastards. Archos, although somewhat heavier is a pretty good alternative to apple, especially the Archos+, not as dainty but more robust, the MP4 units record satellite direct of the tuner with DVR station, have WiFi, YouTube, Browser, large HDDs, quality screens, Bigger Screens, replaceable batteries and quite a few other tit bits. Support the opposition and then people like Apple have to listen. Good luck to all!
