Bluetooth and the Celluon Laserkey
If Bluetooth worked perfectly every time life would be so much easier.
At the moment, we're trying to pair a Celluon Laserkey CL800BT (a similar product to the I-Tech VKB, which we reviewed some time back) with a Dell Axim running Windows Mobile 2003.
It's difficult to tell where the problem lies - it could be the PDA or it could be the CL800BT, but we're pretty sure the underlying problem is Bluetooth.
If there was a simple 'pair' option on the PDA it would be easier, but the Bluetooth menus go on and on, leaving you to deal with Serial port connection configuration, encryption and all manner of other settings. So far we've spent around 3 hours trying to sort the problem out.
On a similar theme, we're also having difficulty using a Bluetooth connection to sync a Nokia N70 with Outlook. It works fine as soon as you set it up, but if the phone goes out of the Bluetooth range of the PC it's 50/50 whether or not it will reconnect when it returns.
It's a shame Bluetooth has so many issues - with 802.11g and Pre-N wireless networks being hacked left, right and centre, short range wireless connections certainly have their advantages.
EDIT: Our review of the Laserkey is now live. We tried pairing it with a Treo 600 and, unlike with the Dell, it worked perfrectly. Bluetooth is funny like that.
