Medion launches £400 laptop

Medion_mam_2080 Medion has launched a £400 laptop, which goes on sale on 10 April. The spec isn't great, and it isn't the sort of machine we'd usually highlight, but its price caught our eye.

The Medion Mam 2080's low price in part is thanks to its processor - it uses a 1.5GHz Via C7-M.

It also has a dual layer DVD writer, a 15inch screen, a tiny 40GB hard disk drive and 256MB memory, which is horribly small - especially when you consider that the Medion has only a 64MB Via PN800 integrated graphics chip.

It weighs 2.4kg. Medion calls this light, we call this weight average, but just about acceptable if you need to carry it around all day.

Expect very pedestrian performance; but if you need a cheap second laptop for office type tasks - and that won't include using it for software such as Photoshop - this is worth a look. If you can afford more, avoid - we've just put live a group test of £699 notebooks that will be a much better bet for most average users.

The Medion Mam 2080 is available from Woolworths.

I don't think 40 GB HDD is that bad - if you need a lot of space for music, videos, etc., you're going to have a 200-300 GB external HDD anyway. And most people buying something this cheap probably have a desktop PC as their main machine.
RAM-wise, upgrading to 768 MB should be cheap and easy.
Battery specs are disappointing, though, if the two hours reported by Woolworths is to be believed. VIA's C7-M processor is supposed to be three things: energy efficient, secure, and cheap! I suspect the machine probably does better than two hours in real life, but then maybe the battery is crap. We won't know until someone does a real review based on an actual specimen!

I have recently bought medion laptop, there were many machines for around £400 but this laptop was on offer at £329. Its a good machine, it runs well but isnt as fast as i was hoping. The battery drains after about 1 hr 20 mins, though i probably havent charged it long enough. The machine suits my needs, im not into gaming or graphics i mainly use pc for e mail and surfing web.Im very happy with it.

I took the plunge today with one of these. It was £329! What else need I say. Its a second PC as I have a good quality desktop and I want this for backing up photos from my digicam when I go on holiday, watching the odd film on the train and would you belive mapping the ecu in my car. Its just about perfect for all of the above.
When you think it comes with a genuine windows XP worth over £100 its only realy £229. Come on stop moaning and give a little credit to a bit of kit that will do a job!
The only thing I am worried about is the lack of an RS232 port. I have tried USB to serial leads in the past with no success, I hope this is something that has now been sorted in the last 4 years.

I agree with most of the comments above, my laptop cant handle too much and cant do too many tasks at once, but it does the job. I maily email and surf so its perfect... the only things I have to say I dont like, are the external dvd drive that takes up two of the 4 usb slots available, And the speakers arent really all that good. And the volume control could have had a little more thought but other than these little niggles, its a great laptop if your on a budget.

Woolworths claim that this laptop was originally priced at £799.99. I bought what I thought was a half price laptop in the sale paying £399. I have since discovered that this was the original price. So beware1
