Hitachi launch 2.5" PMR hard drive
The Travelstar 5K160 represents Hitachi's first foray into the perpendicular magenetic recording (PMR) hard drive market. It's a 2.5" drive for laptops and at 160GB is quite sizeable indeed.
PMR enables manufacturers to cram more bits into each disk by aligning the bits in a perpendicular, as opposed to longitudinal, fashion.
We're looking forward to getting this drive into our labs and putting it through its paces.

Would new Laptops running the latest chips and software be able to upgrade without much 'addoo'!
I really fancy taking out my 60GB and plonking one of these 160GB into my Fujitsu Siemens P7010

Mike,
There's no reason it shouldn't work with existing laptops. It comes with an IDE or SATA interface. As far as the motherboard is concerned the 5K160 is just a regular hard disk.
