How to solve Vista driver problems for HP inkjet printers

HP Invent. So why not HP Support? If, like me, you've been dreading having to ditch a perfectly good inkjet printer because HP's dragging its feet on Vista drivers, here's a bit of good news to cheer you up. HP has published a kludge to let you get several unsupported Deskjet and Photosmart models up and running.

They're basically telling you to install the nearest built-in Vista driver to give you basic functionality until they get their fingers out to write proper drivers - there are detailed instructions at the link above, but you basically con Vista into installing a parallel port printer and then change the port to USB when it's succeeeded.

My Deskjet 5150 is running now using the 5600 model drivers and at least it will print a Windows test page now. And in colour. Whoopee.

And while I'm in the mood: Hey, Fujitsu - where the hell are the Vista drivers for my ScanSnap fi-511EOX2??

I managed to make the Scansnap work by setting the 'run as administrator' flag on the properties of the Scansnap Monitor EXE file and setting the Windows XP compatibility mode. You still get a warning if you put Scansnap into the Startup group, but it does work.

To Cverrier - how did you make those changes for Scansnap? I'm having the same issue with Vista and Scansnap but can't find the settings you mentioned.

Thanks for the tip. Just to make sure, I ran the setup program as administrator too. Now it's working fine, although the Card Minder application refuses to work.

To set the compatibility mode, right-click on the Scansnap Monitor program icon and choose 'Properties'. Then select the 'Compatibility' tab and choose Win XP SP2, and check the box for 'Run as Administrator'.

Inkjet 1310 s/w will print a page w/Vista, but no pics. Vista gave me problems loading the hp driver on my wifes computer. I have XP and love it.

Can any one help me with my HP 1220C printer, the drivers with vista only allow plain paper to be used, it will not work with any other setings, there are no new drivers on HP’s web site, so I thought that I would buy a HP 1280 printer as I need to retain A3 size, so I borrowed one to try, down loaded the latest HP drivers for vista, from HP and lo and behold this printer will also only print on plain paper, HP phone line were no help at all and their E-Mail contact for new purchases do not support the 1280, although it can still be bought, any suggestions would be appreciated

After years of sticking it out with Microsoft, I am finally a die-hard anti-Microsoft consumer. I have stuck with them through even MS-DOS and Windows 3.1. I chose windows mobile over palm. I chose IE over netscape, mozilla, and firefox. I even had an easier time with Windows 2000 than this.

My next PDA will definately be a palm-based OS. I am running ubuntu on my computer, and I have helped install linux on my entire family’s computers. I recommended that my sister get Apple. For Christmas I was thinking about getting my little cousin an XBOX 360, but I am getting a Nintendo Wii instead. Microsoft’s focus on predatory strategy and getting the hype and wow right but the basics wrong has pushed me over the edge. I urge all of you to tell as many people to abandon Microsoft en masse. Microsoft needs to hear about this.

I could not get my USB drive, and HP printers to work with Windows Vista despite downloading and installing windows vista made drivers from HP. Only thing that installed properly incidentally was a Windows mouse.

i recently got an hp deskjet 1280 but it seems i cannot change any settings due to an incopatibility issue with Windows vista.Alas i cant print work from CAD based programs.when i do get to print the objects are distored and of poor quality...downloading drivers didnt help either and the print preview window became a nuisance as well....help!

i updated my driver for my hp1220C on XP after a crash that stopped the valuable print preview function working ...(printer worked but was print immediate - -and no tool box options etc) . i can't believe i found how to fix the driver ... you need to right click the exe file [before running it] dj1074en.exe or whatever ... and 'properties' - 'compatibility' click near 'compatibility mode' 'windows 2000' - and voila -- i now have the print preview and all the lovely functions back again!!!! crazy!! took me 3 hours to find this ... it may well work with Vista -- to select the windows 2000 option .. don't know with that one ... at least until HP update all drivers corectly and clearly

Tried the suggested vista "HP has published a kludge" to get my hp business deskjet 1100d running.

Sucessful to a point in that it printed but have now decent colour control as the 'toolbox' etc is missing.

HP are not caring for customers and if, as a previous writer said, "they should get their finger out", I could think of somthing else to say!

HP your customers expect you to provide a Vista driver for such a printer, please do it fast.

Don't blame Microsoft for third-party Vista drivers that either don't exist or don't work -- blame the driver authors who work for the hardware manufacturers! If most manufacturers can produce fully-working Vista drivers it's obviously not Vista to blame for the driver problems -- it's those companies like HP who have failed to keep up with the other big-names, and probably have a team of driver-writers who are second-rate. And because of them (and others like them), Microsoft gets all the flak (again).
