The first DirectX 10 game is…

Supreme_commander_poster Supreme Commander if all goes to plan.

Despite speculation that it could be many, many months before we see DirectX 10 games that take advantage of Vista systems with 8800GTS/GTX cards or ATI's upcoming R600, Gas Powered Games' Supreme Commander, a massive real time strategy game, could steal first honours.

The game launches in the third week of February and Greg Jones from THQ told PCW a patch enabling DirectX 10 support (or Shader Model 4.0 for much more detailed pictures) will be a free download "within a month of the game shipping", so mid to late March.

This real time strategy game is claimed to be the spiritual successor to the highly praised Total Annihilation that was released 10 years ago. The software developers are once again led by Chris Taylor but don't have the legal rights to call it Total Annihilation 2.

It looks like an advanced and massive Command and Conquer – with 4 players you could have an astonishing 16,000 units on the battlefield.

Support for multi-display setups, a fine-tuned zooming ability and mathematical ballistics simulation (rather than set paths for missiles and bullets) means a powerful system is a must, even before DirectX 10 support is considered.

sup com will be the best real time strategy of all time. which is great because the rts genre is saturated with all these micro-managment style rts's like starcrap and crapany of heroes. gamers should be rewarded for either stratiegic or tactical command ability, not how well they micro-manage their blob of soldiers with heal and protection bullcrap.

16000 units .... Yes ....Theoritically ....tell that to my quad core .... it may not agree with that ...... ;)

Used to run 15000 units in the original TA on 1Gig P3s...
(With 3 players)

OK it dragged a little (or a lot, depending on who was firing at the time), but we did it ;)

It's also worth noting that this is one of the first games to be optimized for Intel quad core architecture.

Presumably so many units doing different things at the same time scales well with multiple cores/calculations.

Ah well, since I'm not interested in the evidently inferior DX9 version, I'll be waiting to get the DX10 one as and when I get a DX10 card and vista. Year+

I am in closed beta and I can tell you it is only going to get better from here on out. Dual Screen works great :) one of the few games to get it working flawless. The engine hardcap I believe is 50k units per side :), though I think you can even go higher with some modding. This game is going to change the way we play RTS games forever. The modding community will kick into full gear once this game hits stores (you can expect everything from a star wars mod to a C&C mod.)

Lol though flight simulator x was the first direct x 10 game ?

Posted by Glitch | April 18, 2007 10:13 PM

Flight Simulator X: Adrenaline will be the first iteration to support DirectX 10.

It is due for release in the autumn of 2007, so no, it is not the first dx 10 game.
