World's smallest hard disk-based mp3 player goes on sale
The world's smallest hard disk-based mp3 player has gone on sale outside of Japan.
Announced last September, the Kenwood 'Media Keg' HD10GB7 has a 10GB hard disk, a 1.5in OLED, weighs 78g and has a volume of 46 cubic cm - by comparison the 8GB Ipod Nano only weighs 40g and has a volume of 23 cubic cm.
The Media Keg can currently be bought for £271 inc. Vat which is extortionate when you can pick up the 8GB Nano for £146 inc. Vat.
Battery life is quoted at 20-24 hours and a redeeming feature is its ability to play a wide range of file formats including mp3, wav and wma and DRM infested wma audio files. It's also got attractive looks and audiophiles will love the Kenwood brand.

Yeah, but in all fairness (to price), it probably doesn't need iTunes (and its problems) to be installed on a computer, before it can be used.
That being said, I'm not really that great a fan of MP3 players, full stop. .
I like the thought of convergence, and would personally love to see a device - much like the Sony UX390 (just released, I am told) that had a 24 hour battery life. Yeah I know beggars can't be choosers, or whatever suitable expression you wish to insert, but it's a wish nonetheless.
Incidentally, I currently have a MDA Vario with a 2gb miniSD card, filled with music, and that actually seems to fit my "convergence" issues quite well, as I have a really nice cradle I can plug it into, and it then really does feel part of the PC. Also, as a side note, with Beta Player on the PPC, and Pocket DivX Encoder on the PC (had to look it up: http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1080) , I can - when converted - get all the Prison Breaks OR Hustle episodes (1.1-3.6) on at any one time, if I go without the music...
(The oversided, but incredibly "beautiful", XDA Exec I gave up, had a 4gb SD card in it (before it broke - guess where I got the card? Hint: They have ratings (which you fill in immediately) and power sellers) - I could have both music AND videos. Life was very good back then.)
Which leads to another point. I did feel that XP and Office 2003 - as opposed to Vista (64 ultimate) and Office 2007 - felt just a bit more PPC friendly. I appreciate that Vista and "The Sync Center" (as well as Office12) are "new", but my point remains valid, I feel.
I've just realised that I've gone on far too long. Stay well, PCW peeps. I'll be back with more geeky (but friendly) comments anyday soon - unfortunately.
